Zooplankton Migration During the Eclipse

Bio-acoustic sonar data sent to shore at the speed of light, thanks to the high bandwidth fiber optic cables on the National Science Foundations Cabled Array operated by the University of Washington, shows that Diel Vertical Migration (DVM), occurred off the Oregon coast during the Great American Eclipse.  Zooplankton migrated below the euphotic zone early in the morning of the eclipse, then began their ascent as the sky darkened, and then returned below the euphotic zone after the eclipse was over. This project was completed as part of the UW VISIONS experiential sea-going program that took place on the 2017 NSF-UW Cabled Array operations and maintenance cruise.
