INVITATION FOR UNDERGRADUATE & GRADUATE STUDENT PARTICIPATION

Applications Due on March 1, 2013

We are looking for undergraduate and graduate students interested in the UW Sea-Going Research and Discovery (OCE 411) course, which will include a seagoing component in July & August, 2013. The expedition will take place aboard the 274’ research vessel Thomas G. Thompson and will utilize the Canadian remotely operated vehicle (ROV) ROPOS.

As a member of this oceanographic expedition and class, you will be taking part in the construction of America’s first high-power and high-bandwidth underwater cabled observatory, part of the National Science Foundation’s Ocean Observatories Initiative. Due to a limited number of berths, interested students must submit an application by March 1, 2013. Accepted students will register for the University of Washington’s Ocean 411 course with Professors Debbie Kelley and John Delaney.

On board, you will work alongside scientists, engineers, and the ship’s crew to gain at-sea research and sea-going experience using advanced research technologies. The course will also emphasize the importance of science communication during your time at sea and at the culmination of the expedition.

VISIONS’13 will take place in July and August, 2013 and will be split into 3 separate legs. The exact dates of each leg are being finalized and will be posted here as soon as they are available.

Leg 1 - July: Southern Hydrate Ridge (ports: Seattle, WA > Newport, OR)
Leg 2 - August: Axial Volcano (ports: Newport, OR > Newport, OR)
Leg 3 - August: Axial Volcano (ports: Newport, OR > Seattle, WA)
