Cabled Array

Cabled Array

The fiber-optic cables of the Cabled Array component of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) carry electrical power (up to 10,000 watts) and telecommunications bandwidth (10 Gbits/sec) into the oceans to serve the needs of science, education, and humanity at large. With design and construction led by the University of Washington, the 900 kilometers of Primary Cables, 33,000 m of extension cables, and 18 junction boxes creates a large-aperture natural laboratory for conducting a wide range of long-term and innovative experiments within the ocean volume using real-time control over the entire cabled system. Cabled, instrumented moorings that reach ~ 10,000 ft above the seafloor access processes operating through full ocean depths.
